Sexual Health – Simple Steps for Maintaing Optimum Sexual Health

Sexual health today, is nothing more than an expression of your general state of health. Moreover, your sexual health is a good indication of your general state of health. If your libido is falling, if you have erectile dysfunction, or painful intercourse, you probably have other conditions affecting your general health.

Do you do a lot of sitting during your work week? Anyone who works at a computer can say yes to that (unless, that is, you have a treadmill desk!). One of the things I worry about when sitting all day is the flat-butt effect. Keep that backside toned by getting down on the floor and doing a few sets of these each day. Really, it will help...

Want to tone up that rear? Join me in doing a series of exercises by the fab Jackie Warner, which I found over at Fitness recently. This one, called the "Donkey Kick" really works your glutes and combats the flat butt effect. (Click here for a bunch more moves to work that behind!)

The Virtues of an Uncooked Diet

"It is easy to eat raw (food)," says Evansville, Ill., dietitian, Linda Ruff, "it's just not easy to give up cooked foods."

When you think about it, most people eat raw food all the time without really thinking about it: Leafy salad greens, fresh fruits, vegetables like carrots, cucumbers, peppers, celery, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower and tomatoes and even raw nuts and seeds count as familiar foods.

But giving up cooked food eliminates a lot more that most people are quite attached to: Meat, poultry and fish, for sure, but also our beloved breads, familiar hot cereals and grain products (sprouts are OK), dairy and eggs in addition to traditionally cooked-before-consuming root vegetables like potatoes.

The PJ Phenomenon: Why Do All Pajama Bottoms End Up as High Waters?

We've known each other for almost a year now, so I'll go ahead and tell you that every night at 7 p.m. I put on my PJs. I'm fully aware that the airing of this information will point to the fact that I have no life. (Now you know.) But I do have babies--two of them! Anyway, I like to get comfy--and into jammies--right after dinner. It does wonders for my stress levels. But here's the thing I've been wondering for a long time: Why the heck do all pajama bottoms inevitably become high waters?

My 2 year old glanced at my PJ pants the other night, pointed to the bottoms, and said something like this (in toddler speak), "mama, you need to buy more jammies at the store."

The Best Health Advice I've Heard all Week--It's Simple, Funny and Totally Applicable

I don't know about you, but sometimes I find that it's the little bits of wisdom that really sink in and have meaning for me. I mean, you can read about the "12 best superfoods for women," or the "17 germiest places in the world," or the "9 best moves to do for a slim bod," but sometimes the stuff that really ends up being meaningful and habit-changing is the small stuff, like this little sentence I heard recently from a friend ...

My pal, Frances Largeman-Roth, R.D., author of the pregnancy nutrition guide Feed the Belly, sent out a little 12-word tweet recently that stuck with me (if you're on Twitter, you should follow her, and (blushing) me too!). Here's what she said:

Slim By Summer: This Tip Will Make You Re-Think How You Order at Restaurants

Ever since my cook-at-home challenge last month, I haven't been eating out much, which is good--I'm eating healthier! But, I still love restaurants (don't we all?) and next time I find myself giving a server my order, here's what I'm going to do...

We all know that there's usually a lot of oil that goes into restaurant cooking (here's why, explained by celeb chef Devin Alexander), but did you know that you can actually cut the calories of your meal in half--just by asking?

I recently chatted with Robin Stotter, director of culinary research and development for the restaurant chain P.F. Chang's. Robin told me about something that P.F. Chang's does for customers who are watching their weight, and it's pretty cool.

Slim by Summer: Some Stars Swear By the Lemonade Diet--Should You Try It?

I was flipping through a celebrity magazine the other day at the spa while getting a much-needed pedicure when I read about all the celebs who have put themselves through the "lemonade" diet/cleanse. But does fasting and only drinking lemonade for days--even weeks--have any redeeming qualities? Would any respected health expert recommend it? In the interest of slimming down by summer, I did some looking into the topic....

I have to admit, the idea of doing a cleanse sounds appealing. Don't you just love the word "cleanse"? It gives the impression that you're ridding your body of all the gross impurities (whatever they may be) and slimming down in the process.

Sleep Problems Could Become Your Worst Nightmare

Until he got treatment, Kevin Pfister was one of the more than 40 million Americans who are chronically ill with various sleep disorders, not counting the other 30 million who have sporadic sleep problems.

For years, Pfister went through his days groggy and unexcited about life.

"I was tired all the time, no energy, no motor," the 46-year-old Victoria man said. "I was always giving people excuses why I was tired all the time: 'I work nights. I'm getting older.' None of those are excuses for being tired all the time."

Seven years ago, Pfister learned he had sleep apnea, a sometimes-deadly disorder that affects 18 million Americans, plus another 12 million who are estimated to be undiagnosed.

Sex question: Do baby oil and sex mix?

Dear Dr. H,

It is safe to use baby oil as a lubricant in an effort to have better sex?

Read on for Dr. Hilda Hutcherson's response...

A. It's safe, but it isn't the best option. For one, you shouldn't use baby oil with condoms since oil deteriorates latex, leaving you vulnerable to STDs and unplanned pregnancy. There are unlimited options of lubricants that are meant to replicate a woman's natural lubrication and that work and feel much better! I'm a fan of K-Y products and Astroglide. Or you can try this sample pack, and have fun testing them to find the one you like best!

Readers, do you have questions about lubricants? Let's chat about them here!

Question of the Day

Question: There's much talk of "good" fat vs. "bad" fat. What's the difference?

Answer: Although all fat is calorically rich, it is the saturated fats that are bad for your cholesterol, according to Walter Bortz, M.D. in Diet--Fat Alert.

Fat is classified according to how saturated or unsaturated it is. These terms refer to the chemical nature of fat, whether it has the full complement of hydrogen atoms (saturated) or a relative lack of hydrogen atoms (unsaturated). Fundamentally, saturated fats are solid, and unsaturated fats are liquid. Nevertheless, they all contain the same amount of caloric energy. Ultimately, the critical distinction between the two is that the effect of saturated fat on raising blood cholesterol levels is more dramatic.

Orange Juice May Counteract an Unhealthy Breakfast

Do you ever go to a fast-food drive thru to grab a quick breakfast? Or indulge on that large, butter-covered bagel. Then grab a glass of orange juice. Researchers have discovered that orange juice may counteract some of the bad effects of a fast-food breakfast or perhaps any high-fat, high-carbohydrate meal.

Researchers at the University at Buffalo, N.Y., suggest the high amounts of antioxidants in orange juice -- the flavonoids naringenin and hesperidin -- help prevent blood vessel and other damage cause by inflammatory free radicals caused by eating a high-fat fast-food meal.

First author Husam Ghanim asked three groups of 10 normal-weight healthy men and women between the ages of 20-40 to break an overnight fast by eating a 900-calorie fast-food breakfast containing 81 grams of carbohydrates and 51 grams of fat.

Olive Oil Seen as Breast Cancer Foe

Life's simpler things often turn out to be among the best. That's a claim that could be made for olive oil, which a new study in Europe indicates can be surprisingly effective in preventing breast cancer.

The study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, found that a spoonful of olive oil a day could reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by as much as 45 percent. It's described as the most convincing evidence yet of such a link.

The findings were based on studies by researchers of the diets of more than 60,000 women between the ages of 40 and 76. After a period of three years, they found, those who did not develop breast cancer had a higher intake of olive oil.

How Peaches Can Help You Build Muscle

Not that you want Madonna's arms or anything (speaking of which, what do you think of her Gladiator-esq biceps--wow, or whoa?), but who wouldn't like their muscles to be a bit more defined, a bit more toned, a bit more, well, muscular? Apparently, peaches can help.

The potassium rich fruit is loaded with potassium, an ingredient your muscles need to stay svelte. Here's what RealAge had to say on the topic.

"A diet heavy in proteins and cereal grains can cause blood to become too acidic. When this happens, muscle tissue can waste away. Fruits and vegetables, though, make your body's pH more alkaline -- mostly thanks to their high potassium content. So it makes sense that people in a recent study who loaded up on potassium-rich produce had more lean muscle mass than their produce-shirking peers."

HIV Study Shows Gel Helps Prevent HIV & Herpes in Women

A recent HIV study showed progress in the fight against the disease.  A gel with an anti-retroviral drug  used to treat HIV was effective in reducing a woman's risk of HIV and genital herpes, researchers from South Africa said.

Co-principal investigator Dr. Quarraisha Abdool Karim of the Center for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa and Columbia University in New York says the microbicide, which contains 1 percent tenofovir -- a common component of the three-drug cocktail used to treat HIV -- was found to be 39 percent effective in reducing a woman's risk of HIV during sex and 51 percent effective in preventing genital herpes.

Health Controversy: Pretzel Ad Declares "You Can Never Be Too Thin"

Oh boy. Some genius copywriter cranked a doozie of a line. In the latest ads for a new line of pretzels, ads declare "you can never be too thin." The outrage, after the jump ...

New ads from Pretzel Crisps in New York City are causing quite a stir. The offending words? "You can never be too thin." Critics say the ads are trying to make people feel bad about their bodies, even encourage disordered eating. Skip lunch and have a few dry pretzels, for instance.

The company released a statement indicating that they're considering "making some adjustments to the campaign"--yeah, probably a good idea guys.

Health Controversy: Is Pot Suddenly ... Hot? (Take Our Poll and Tell Us What You Think)

Is it just me, or has marijuana suddenly gone, well, mainstream? It's been a theme in recent movies ("It's Complicated" and "Inglourious Basterds," for example) and recent pot-fueled plot lines have crept into TV shows such as "One Tree Hill" and "Glee." Medical marijuana is one thing, but suddenly people are opening up about their recreational use (hello Natalie Portman and Whoopi Goldberg! Both have reportedly been partakers). Gals, it's illegal, of course, and comes with a long list of health risks, but we wondered how you would answer this controversial question: In your opinion, is marijuana suddenly becoming a (GASP!) ... do?

Diet and Nutrition Truths

Most of us have read magazine articles on food and dieting while waiting in the market checkout line or while commuting. Some people obtain diet news on a regular basis by subscribing to monthly magazines. But how accurate is the food and nutrition news you read in these publications?

Some magazines have much more truthful nutrition reports than others, says The American Council on Science and Health (ACSH). The ACSH has been tracking magazine nutrition reporting for 15 years. According to their most recent findings, the highest percentage of accurate nutrition information is found in Consumer Reports, which netted a score of 95 percent.

The supposed fat-fighting beverage for men? Tea! Or so say researchers. According to a new study, men who drink two or more cups of tea a day have slimmer waistlines than those who drink coffee or nothing at all.

Boomer Poll Shows High Alzheimer's Anxiety

A new survey of baby boomers shows anxiety over the specter of Alzheimer's and frustration over slow cures.

In releasing the data, patient advocacy group Alliance for Aging Research called for recognition of the brain disease as an urgent national health crisis and urged stepped-up timelines for new therapies.

These survey findings underscore the fact that when baby boomers are asked to address the potential of Alzheimer's in their future, they are clearly not ready emotionally, psychologically or financially, said Daniel Perry, AAR's executive director. Many boomers are currently more focused on health issues like heart disease or arthritis and mistakenly consider AD a problem of their elders. But when asked to consider themselves at age 70 with Alzheimer's disease, there was a visceral reaction and an awakening to the reality of what could await them, he said.

Big Breakfasts Don't Help You Lose Weight

How many times have you heard or read that the key to losing weight lies in eating a solid breakfast?  That you’ll consume fewer calories as the day goes on?

Well, you can toss that advice out the window because a recent study found just the opposite.   Researchers in from the Else-Kröner-Fresenius Center of Nutritional Medicine at the Technical University in Munich, Germany found that people who ate a breakfast with 400 calories more than a small breakfast tended to eat 400 more calories per day.

Hmph.  So, eating a big breakfast is just that: eating a big breakfast!

Their findings suggest that the whole “eating a large breakfast thing” may have actually come about from misinterpretation of research that was saying given a fixed number of calories per day, those people who consumed more of them at breakfast tended to eat less the rest of the day.

Choosing a Toothpaste: More Than Just Mint

When it comes to plaque removal, it's your toothbrush that does most of the heavy lifting, but toothpaste contributes by removing stains and leaving your mouth fresher. Typically, commercial toothpastes are a concoction of abrasives, foaming agents, water, and binders, with flavor, color, and sweeteners added. They also may contain therapeutic agents such as fluoride or ingredients designed to combat tooth sensitivity. The main difference between gels and pastes is that gels contain more thickeners.

Be Aware of Abrasiveness

An important consideration when choosing toothpaste is its level of abrasiveness. Materials such as chalk, bicarbonate, and silicon or aluminum oxides remove external tooth stains. Polishers are included to restore the luster that abrasive materials dull. Although you want a toothpaste with enough abrasiveness to remove stains, high abrasive content and an incorrect brushing technique can lead to permanent tooth damage, particularly around the gum line. Abrasion also can wear away the fragile gum tissue, causing the gums to recede faster.

Breakfast at Your Desk: My Favorite New Frozen Waffles

Frozen waffles make such a yummy and easy breakfast (or snack!), but a lot of the whole-grain varieties have a cardboardy taste (sorry, at least in my opinion!). But, I finally found a brand that tastes great!

I recently discovered De Wafelbakkers frozen waffles. The "made from scratch" waffles are made with oat bran and spelt, high in fiber and rich in B-vitamins (love that!).

Best part: They taste amazing, especially when topped with sliced bananas and drizzled with a little maple syrup. I found them at Whole Foods, but you can buy them elsewhere too.

Are you a frozen waffle kind of gal? What's your fave variety?

Morning my dears! A new exotic yogurt has hit the grocery store, and of course, the second I saw it, I loaded up my cart. (Yes, I get excited about new yogurt!) Let me tell you what I think of this new, and sort of unusual, "Icelandic" yogurt...

Side note: Is it just me, or is there a big Iceland boom going on right now? I have two friends (and one editor!) who are either in Iceland right now or have gone recently.

So, people are talking about Siggi, a new "strained" Icelandic-style yogurt that is now being sold at Whole Foods (and other stores--keep an eye out).

I bought some Siggi yogurt and took it for a test run. The verdict? Really good, but very different than the yogurt we're used to. Here's what to expect with Siggi:

Lower Back Pain - Exposing The Secrets Lying Underneath

It might not sound serious at first if you have lower back pain. In actuality, it may be a sign of something more serious. Keep reading for more related information.

Having lower back pain would appear to be not an enormous matter at first, but it does tell lots regarding the condition of your body. More often than not, it can be boiled down to a few problems. Go on reading to discover the underlying truths of this circumstance.

Whereas it could probably be caused by serious issues corresponding to kidney stones or a raft, more often than not it is only attributable to muscle imbalance, which could possibly be the direct results of improper sitting pose. To be exact, I have to be frank for not being fully certain with how people often name the situations which might be related to it. A fast google search reveals that they are called as herniated disc, misaligned vertebrae or something similar.Well, regardless of how they're referred to as, one factor is for sure: All may be traced again to muscle imbalance.

Candida Diet: A Way of Eating for the Whole Family

Being on a diet is rarely a fun experience. You may have to skip out on the trip to the ice cream parlor or have a diet-friendly snack while everyone downs chili cheese fries. It is probably the worst when you have to fix yourself something different then everyone else in you family. It makes more work for you and can be frustrating to have to constantly feel like you are eating differently than the people around you. However, people following the candida diet can easily prepare the same foods for the entire family.

The Candida diet is a nutritious, whole foods-based plan that will only improve the health of your family members. You don’t have to restrict your family members from indulging in treats outside of the house, but you do have some control over what they eat in the home. An important part of caring for people we love should be to give appropriate attention to their nutrition.

I loved her in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," and I can't wait to see her new flick, "My Life In Ruins." But Nia Vardalos is way more than a great actress and writer, I think she's a great role model. I loved what she had to say recently about weight and the big fat sexist double standard...

****

Here's what Nia had to say recently while guest blogging on CNN.com:

On her weight loss: "It's just weight. Just 40 pounds of fat now gone from my body, but wow, it's pretty much all I get asked about. In the last year, I got to star in a movie, wrote and directed my next one, and adopted a three year old from American Foster Care. But guess what I'm asked...how did I lose the weight?"

Choosing a Baby Sitter You Can Count on

Parents are particularly scrupulous when looking for daytime child care arrangements. But should you be any less careful when hiring a baby sitter for a one-night booking? It is equally important to make the right choice when hiring a nighttime sitter.

The Search Is on

Don't assume that a relative or family friend is any better than a sitter-for-hire; the most important qualifications for a sitter are maturity and responsibility. Here, three sources for finding people that meet these qualifications:

1. Get Personal Referrals

The best referrals come from dependable sources. Inquire among people you trust: ask how they found the baby sitter, if they were comfortable with the arrangement, if they would ask the sitter back again and what they paid. Places to consider when sleuthing for names are your pediatrician's office, churches and your child's school.

Dutiful Dentists Detect Disorders Of The Eating Kind

I can just hear my readers (what few there are) quietly asking themselves "What do eating disorders have to do with dental health?? A lot, apparently. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, dentists are becoming the first line of defense when it comes to spotting eating disorders in patients. I mention this in light of the fact that National Eating Disorders Awareness Week begins tomorrow and runs through February 28.

"A parent may not recognize a child is anorexic or bulimic, however, through a routine dental checkup, a dentist may spot the oral signs of the disease," said Dr. Katina Morelli, D.D.S., dental director for Delta Dental of Illinois. "Eating disorders have serious implications for oral health and overall health so when dentists see the symptoms of eating disorders we encourage our patients to seek help."

Candida Diet - Tips for Sticking with It

Helpful tips for making it easier to stick to with the Candida diet.

The Candida Diet is one of the most challenging diets there is to adhere to. It is extremely rigid, limiting and bland to the senses and doesn't allow for much variety or flexibility. So much so that many people feel utterly deprived when trying to follow it. No matter how you look at it, that is the truth of the matter. There's just no way around it and really no way to soften the blow.

One of the biggest challenges of this diet is the fact that Candida itself creates overwhelming cravings for sugar and refined carbohydrates. It's not uncommon for those following the anti-candida diet to engage in frequent cheating or completely fall off the wagon and go on a sugar/carbohydrate binge.

Cellulite Removal Cost

Cellulite removal cost totally dependents on the treatment method chosen to reshape the skin affected with fatty deposits. To know more about how much does cellulite removal cost, read on...

The term 'cellulite' needs no explanation to anyone, even though some individuals may choose to ignore this problem that gives a bumpy look to the thighs, buttocks and the stomach. Contrary to the belief, cellulite are not just fat deposits but a combination of fat and waste matter (body fluids). This lumpy matter (cellulite) commonly develops in women who are in the age group of 30-40. Leading a sedentary lifestyle and hormonal imbalance are some of the reasons behind formation of cellulite. Even though people are aware of cellulite reduction treatments, many are ignorant about the cost associated with them. People on a tight budget cannot afford a treatment that demands a high cellulite removal cost and so often go for inexpensive remedies that generally involve use of topical products.

What Are Your Food Quirks?

Yesterday, Joanna asked a fun question on Smitten: What are your funny quirks? Hers were so cute: she sleeps diagonally and has a fear of elevators (oh, and hates coffee). I thought a fun spin on this question could be this: What are your FOOD quirks? Here are mine (don't laugh)...

****

*I am a foam purist, as in the foam on my tall soy latte has to be thick, rich and velvety. I get cranky when a barista slacks off on the foam and it comes out all airy and bubbly (good foam takes effort--I know, I worked at Starbucks in college).

*Bread dough. Confession: I kind of think yeast bread or pizza dough is appealing. I always want to sneak a little taste. Odd, I know! (Did you see my post on nutritional yeast?)

What's Your Favorite Fitness Moment? Mine = Running Barefoot on the Beach

Admit it, exercise can be a real drag sometimes. But when you find something that feels like fun--or gives you such a great feeling--isn't that pure bliss? It happened to me over the weekend when I kicked off my shoes and hit the beach, barefoot, for one of the most incredible jogs of my life ...

When's the last time you had an incredible workout that you loved? Were you doing something with friends? Trying something new? For me, some of my most memorable fitness experiences have been when I've broken out of my routine and tried something new.

Take last weekend, for example: I was with my family on vacation at the beach, and instead of hitting the pavement for my usual 3-mile jog, I ventured down to the beach, kicked off my shoes, and went on an intense--and unforgettable--45 minute jog down one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline on the West Coast. The whole time I was jogging, I had this calm, happy, renewed feeling. I loved the squishy sand under my toes and the soothing crash of the waves on the shore that made me forget how hard my muscles were working to propel me down the shore. I loved every second of that jog.

Weird Health News: The Strange Thing Guys' Ogling & Cat Calls Do to Women

It's probably been going on since the beginning of time--men ogling and cat-calling women. Ever happened to you? While some women consider it a compliment, others say it makes them feel gross, and objectifies women (I'm in the latter camp). And, just wait until you hear what researchers say such unwanted attention from men actually does to us--they studied it!

Allergic Reaction to Sunscreen

Many people out there fall prey to an allergic reaction to sunscreen, which is the most vital product that everyone must possess. Here you'll find out about why this happens, and what chemicals to stay clear from...

No one should be caught outside in the sun without sunscreen first applied on their skin even if they get allergic reaction to sunscreen. Those having darker skin tones can use SPFs (Sun Protection Factor) as low as 15, but those with lighter skin tones, should use sunscreen with a higher SPF, since their skin is more susceptible to absorbing more of the sun's rays. You can look up on SPF sunscreen meaning, to get a better idea. An oil free sunscreen is a good option to go with. When the weather isn't agreeable, like say on a hot, sticky day, the last thing you need is an oily face, dripping with sunscreen. Use one that is easily absorbed by the skin. Trust me, you'll notice how easier it is to even to put on make up, without having to mess it up if sunscreen is oil based.
