Slim by Summer: Some Stars Swear By the Lemonade Diet--Should You Try It?

I was flipping through a celebrity magazine the other day at the spa while getting a much-needed pedicure when I read about all the celebs who have put themselves through the "lemonade" diet/cleanse. But does fasting and only drinking lemonade for days--even weeks--have any redeeming qualities? Would any respected health expert recommend it? In the interest of slimming down by summer, I did some looking into the topic....

I have to admit, the idea of doing a cleanse sounds appealing. Don't you just love the word "cleanse"? It gives the impression that you're ridding your body of all the gross impurities (whatever they may be) and slimming down in the process.

That's, more or less, the idea behind the The Lemonade Diet (remember the banana diet?), also known as the Master Cleanse, which Beyonce allegedly turned to when she needed to lose 20 pounds for her role in "Dreamgirls."

The drink--a mix of lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper and water (yes, that's it)--is said to help you "lose up to 20 pounds, look younger, ease chronic pain, cleanse your body of internal waste, and boost your energy levels in 10 days"--at least according to the company that markets it.

Sure, it sounds great, but health experts aren't so thrilled. WebMD's Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD, LD, is quite skeptical, in fact: "Of course, weight loss is inevitable when you stop eating and drink very few calories," she writes. "But this kind of diet can also be dangerous to your health. Nutritionists point out that the Master Cleanse diet plan is deficient in all the essential nutrients: calories, vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and fat."

If you must do a cleanse like this (and I know, it's appealing--I'll admit, I'm tempted too), my best advice is to limit to a day or two. Don't try this for an extended period of time, though. It's just too risky. Safer bet? Try these "crash diets" that health experts actually approve of!

Have you ever done a cleanse? Have any of you tried the Lemonade Diet?

The lemonade diet is thus well-liked and effective that skilled nutritionists have combined all of the natural ingredients into one pill that provided the mandatory supplemental dietary needs that the body desires to operate daily.
