Let's say you have a big presentation coming up, or a test you simply cannot fail. You've done the prep work and all the studying in the world-but you're not truly ready unless you have your lucky red patent leather wallet tucked into your bag. Do you think your lucky wallet is actually lucky? Guess what one new study has to say? It might surprise you
This study shows that lucky charms really do work! Study participants gave their good-luck charms to researchers and only half were given them back while doing tasks such as playing memory games. Those who were reunited with their lucky charms performed better on the games.
Okay, so it's not that the objects are lucky in the leprechaun-touched, enchanted sort of way. But if you believe that your lucky hat or ring from Grandma Ethel (or, if you're Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens) has the power to make you do something better, it might boost your confidence and sense of security enough to make you do something better than you might have otherwise. And if that's not lucky, what is?
